Tierra Farm is a Certified Organic manufacturer and distributor of nuts and dried fruits located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Their customers consist mainly of cooperatives and independently owned grocery stores that value working with an employee-owned, environmentally conscious company that manufactures its own products.

Tierra Farm started as a diversified organic vegetable farm in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The organic nuts & dried fruit portion of the business started in 1999, as a way to generate income in the slower winter months. That portion of the business has continued to thrive and evolve into a year-round operation, though they still maintain their original farm.

Tierra Farm offers its customers exceptional value through unbeatable quality at prices that are fair both to the consumer and to the farmer. Their products are made without preservatives, added oils, or refined sugars, in their own peanut-free facility. They manufacture the products they sell: dry roasting and flavoring nuts and seeds, blending trail mixes, grinding butter, and covering nuts and fruits in fair-trade chocolate. Everything is made in small, hand-crafted batches for freshness.

One of their core values has been to cultivate strong relationships with the best organic farmers in the world. They work directly with the farmers from which they source their nuts, seeds, and dried fruit and have worked with some of these farmers for over a decade. Being in direct communication with their farmers allows the preservation of their organic integrity and ensures fair business practices throughout the supply chain.

Tierra Farm produces only Certified Organic products which are grown without synthetic pesticides, genetically modified organisms, or chemical fertilizers. This helps sustain biodiversity, conserves fresh water, and enhances the soil. They generate over 70% of their electricity from solar panels and recycle over 60% of their waste. Their delivery boxes are made from recycled cardboard and our individual product packaging is always made with recyclable materials and/or compostable packaging whenever possible. Tierra Farm proudly features more than 100 products in plastic-free, home-compostable packaging and is wholly committed to going plastic-free by 2023. If home composting isn’t your jam, they have a takeback program for their compostable bags and encourage you to send your used Tierra Farm bags back to them so that they can turn them into compost. As their website states, they’re “working for a world where the food we eat doesn’t come at the expense of the planet or the people on it.”

Tierra Farm is also committed to community. They recognize that there’s a whole big world outside their doors and they want to help make it as beautiful as possible. With this in mind, they embrace opportunities to s

upport local charities and help them continue to do great work in service to others.

Recently selected one of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies by Inc. 5000, Tierra Farm remains committed to its team members. Every single Tierra Farm employee makes a living wage of $20 per hour and enjoys a comprehensive health benefits program, as well as a retirement plan and onsite lunch. In August of 2019, Tierra Farm became a Certified B Corporation, one of only 3,000 companies worldwide to earn this distinction.

Spotlight on CLIF

Warmer weather is returning and outdoor adventures await, so we think you’ll be excited to hear that CLIF Bar & Company is featured in our Member Deals Spotlight! Member-owners can enjoy a 20% discount on their full line of protein bars from March 24th – 30th so it’s a great time to stock up and save before hitting the trail! Read on to learn more about this employee-owned business and the forces that drive them to do things differently:

In 1990, during a one-day, 175-mile bike ride—forever to be known as The Epiphany Ride—an exhausted and hungry Gary Erickson realized he couldn’t choke down another unappetizing energy bar. And just like that, the idea for a better tasting bar was born! Erikson spent a few years testing recipes in his mother’s kitchen until he landed on the first CLIF bar recipe and he chose to name it after his father, Clifford, who first introduced him to wilderness adventures and encouraged him to follow his passions in life.

Ten years later, the company was enjoying success and making an impact in the food scene when Erikson and his partner Kit Crawford were presented with a $120-million offer to sell the company. Ultimately, they chose to walk away from this offer, keeping the company family-owned and values-focused, recognizing that to do more good in the world, CLIF needed to stay private, grow naturally, and sustain itself over time – patience over greed, purpose guiding profit.

By 2010, they took this a step farther by transitioning the business to an employee-owned model by offering 20% of their family-owned common stock to CLIF employees through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). CLIF funds the ESOP annually—it costs employees nothing. Kind of like a 401k plan, except that employees don’t have to put any of their own money into it! With each passing year, employees receive more shares from Clif Bar, the price per share hopefully grows in value, and upon retirement, employees sell their shares back to CLIF, which pays them the value of the stock at that time.

When it comes to doing business, the folks at CLIF Bar & Company believe in a different kind of bottom-line guided by 5 aspirations:

Sustaining our People

Being family- and employee-owned means taking care of their people and their families because healthy, inspired people create delicious and nutritious food. CLIF offers paid volunteer and workout time (with their own in-house trainers), subsidized on-site daycare for all the little Clifsters, six-week paid sabbaticals, and an employee stock-ownership program.

Sustaining our Communities

From the volunteer work they do locally to the way they source ingredients globally, their commitment to the communities they touch is an important part of their identity. Globally, this means sourcing organic and sustainably grown food. For example, their cacao and palm oil are Rainforest Alliance Certified™. The Rainforest Alliance supports a healthy environment, promotes the well-being of workers and their communities, and strictly prohibits child labor.

They also created In Good Company® – an alliance of values-driven businesses working together for a shared purpose. They listen to people in local communities define their needs and then volunteer time to tackle projects focused on food, environmental restoration, and rebuilding after natural disasters.

Last but not least, CLIF® CORPS encourages CLIF employees to volunteer their services in the community on company time. The way they see it, cultivating community together makes them stronger as individuals and as a company.

Sustaining the Planet

The team at CLIF is inspired by the challenge of running a business based on ecological principles. They describe their model for sustainability in four simple words: Think Like a Tree. Trees run on renewable energy, recycle all waste, and sustain and improve the places they grow. As a food company, Think Like a Tree means that CLIF is working to craft food with organic, sustainable ingredients, made with renewable energy, packed in eco-friendly packaging, and delivered by transportation that doesn’t pollute. 84% of their ingredients are Certified Organic and/or Certified Sustainable, 90% of their waste is diverted from landfills and incinerators from CLIF bakeries, and they use 100% green power for their LEED-certified facilities. Click here to learn more about CLIF Bar & Company’s sustainability initiatives.

Sustaining our Brands

Creating brands with integrity, quality, and authenticity means crafting good food from sustainably sourced ingredients. Their commitment to organic and sustainably sourced ingredients guides them to make the right choices for farmers, communities, and the awesome people who love our CLIF®, LUNA®, and CLIF Kid® brands. They listen attentively to athletes, foodies, and the people they meet at events to tap natural demand and follow long-term trends, not short-term fads. But most importantly, they never lose sight of the fact that all the food from each of their brands is a tasty expression of their values and helps contribute to a healthier, more sustainable planet.

Sustaining our Business

Building a healthy, resilient company means that CLIF can invest in the long term, be a catalyst for change, and do more good in the world. Today, remaining a healthy business gives them the power to support their brands, their people, their community, and the planet…not to mention have a ton of fun doing it every day!

Spotlight on Bob’s Red Mill

We’re casting our Co-op Spotlight on Bob’s Red Mill this week to shed a little light on this employee-owned business that has been offering stone-milled grains for nearly 40 years! Member-owners can enjoy 20% off all of Bob’s Red Mill products this week – just in time for holiday baking season. Read on to learn more about their unique business model and their commitment to using traditional stone milling techniques to deliver healthy high-quality grain products to store shelves.

bobsredmillsquarelogo

At Bob’s Red Mill, they believe that quality can’t be rushed. That’s why they manufacture their products using time-honored techniques, like grinding whole grains at cool temperatures with a traditional stone mill. Their beautiful stone grinding mills are much like the ones used during early Roman times and unlike the more commonly used high-speed steel rollers, their mills ensure the most nutritious parts of the whole grain remain intact. It was these beautiful antique grinding mills that first inspired founder Bob Moore to start Bob’s Red Mill nearly 40 years ago.

An Employee-Owned Business

On Bob’s 81st birthday, rather than receiving gifts, he decided to give his greatest gift away – his business! Bob surprised all of his employees by giving them total ownership of Bob’s Red Mill through an employee stock ownership program (ESOP).  Bob didn’t extend this gesture as a means to step away from the company he had created so he could ease into a comfortable retirement. He did so because of his firm belief in putting people before profit, and giving due appreciation to the people who’ve made a company strong. Despite hundreds of lucrative offers to buy his company as he approached “retirement age”, Bob chose the rare path of putting people first and gifted his company to his dedicated, hard-working staff.

Milling, Testing, Packaging, & Distributing Under One Roof

The folks at Bob’s Red Mill knew from day one that if they wanted to ensure the best products possible and ensure quality every step of the way that they’d have to be able to do it themselves. Their facilities in Milwaukie, Oregon include the 325,000 sq ft headquarters, laboratory, and manufacturing plant, plus a 127,000 sq ft distribution center! Their gluten-free products are produced and tested in their separate gluten-free-only facilities to ensure product safety.

Sourcing the Finest Products From Our Farms to Your Table

At Bob’s Red Mill, the relationship with the final product begins at the source. They maintain personal relationships with farmers across the country and make an effort to visit their farms. Together, they are able to ensure that they’re offering the best product available, while always using best practices.

Sourced Non-GMO Pledge

The Bob’s Red Mill Non-GMO Pledge means that the ingredients sourced for their products have been declared by their suppliers to be made without the use of modern biotechnology. The truth is, they’ve always sourced using this practice, but now that commitment is visible on Bob’s Red Mill packages to allow consumers to purchase with confidence.

When you see the Sourced Non-GMO Pledge on one of their packages, you can be sure that they’ve worked with their farmers and suppliers to source ingredients that were not genetically engineered. That work includes cultivating trusted relationships over many years and requiring documentation that attests to the fact that the ingredients have not been genetically modified through the use of modern biotechnology. For assurance, they conduct audits of their suppliers annually. They also source organic ingredients whenever feasible, and by definition, foods that are Certified USDA Organic are made only with ingredients that have not been bioengineered.
