It’s back to school time, and whether you’re packing lunches to send with your kids or pulling together simple lunches for homeschool breaks, we think you’ll love this twist on a classic salad. You’ll find many of the ingredients in our weekly sale from August 24th – 30th, so it’s a great time to give it a try.  Serve it over a bed of greens with crackers, on your favorite sandwich bread, or in one of the wraps featured in this week’s sale!

The season of colorful salads is here and we love the portability of a salad in a jar, allowing lunch to accompany you on all of your summer adventures. This version offers a riff on the Buddha bowl and you’ll find many of the ingredients featured in our Weekly Sale from June 22nd – 28th. There’s a lot of room for creativity in this dish, so feel free to use this as a rough framework and include your favorite seasonal veggies!

Our Weekly Sale from December 31st – January 6th features everything you need to whip up this delicious bagel sandwich, including fresh local bagels from Middlebury Bagel Bakery. We happen to think it makes a perfect breakfast. Or lunch. Or dinner!  

Chickpea Cheddar Quesadillas

It’s back to school time! If your plan is to pack the lunchbox with healthy foods that your kid will actually enjoy eating, we think you’re going to like this recipe. It packs a healthy protein punch and the addition of some salsa and some avocado slices will up the veggie ante. Just remember to toss your avocado slices in a bit of salt and lemon juice to keep them from browning. The quesadillas do require some light prep work, but they keep well in the fridge for up to three days and in the freezer for up to three months, so you can make a batch on a weekend day when you have a few minutes to spare.

Deli Delights

Our adaptable, helpful and enthusiastic staff approached the busy holiday season after months of construction and change without losing a beat, but one major innovation didn’t make its debut until the first week of January:  the Hot Bar!

First of all, due to its size, the enormous stainless steel piece of equipment for both hot and cold foods had to be brought into the building before all the walls were finished.  Then the salad and soup bar was brought back as soon as the dust settled, literally.  Finally, around 11 o’clock on  January 3, when I just happened to be checking out the daily offerings,  I heard “Hot food coming through!”  I was the very first customer who enjoyed the first hot entrée that day:  beef brisket, and it was worth the wait.  Subsequently, vegetarian and vegan dishes appeared, and the mac and cheese is one of the first casseroles to go.

You don’t have to wait for the lunch choices, however.  Hot breakfast sandwiches are available from 8-11am every day, currently cheddar cheese, ham and chicken sausage options.

One additional discovery for folks on a gluten-free diet:  all the mini pizza flavors in the deli case are available with a wheat free crust.  The crust is handled and baked separately with your choice of toppings.  Just ask the staff and minutes later you have a delicious wheat-free pizza.

Staff members encourage questions, suggestions, and other feedback.  They love hearing when things are good, but they want to hear when things could be better.  Thank you for your loyalty during this past year of transition, and please continue to help us serve you as best we can.
